Field Notes

Description:

This male is emerging from his nest.
Males have a full red mowhawk on their head - from their beak to their back neck.

Habitat:

This male spent about 2 weeks pecking this hole in a dead tree. He is now able to spend time in it. He is emerging one morning from the hole. This is the same hole nest that I have seen a female around as well, but at that time, the female was just watching.

Emma - you are so correct!!! This particular bird has filled many mornings with entertainment and reverence, even though that might sound silly. Three days went by and I did not see him and I got worried he was chased off or killed. But then he showed up again. I am hearing at least 3 other woodpecker sounds in different directions. There could be more pairs, or the same one building a backup nest. I don't know - I'll have to research it.
it is deliteful to have something like this in your own backyard. These birds seem to be unusually beautiful.
