Field Notes

Description:

These are large, sea-going seals. Adult males can grow to 4 m (14 feet) in length and weigh 2300 kg (5000 pounds). Females grow to 3 m (11 ft) and 640 kg (1,400 pounds).

Habitat:

Ocean going seal that hauls out on beaches.

Notes:

This young elephant seal had hauled out here to moult. We walked around the beach and took a wide circle around this seal to keep from disturbing him.
