Superb Blue Wren
Malurus cyaneus
-37.751, 144.919
Field Notes
Description:
Tiny, slender bird. Buff body, pale underside and breast, with a scattering of blue feathers on cheeks and head, and deep blue tail means this is a male in eclipse plumage.
Habitat:
Undergrowth in woodlands. In this case, a wild bird taking advantage of the grounds of Werribee Open Range Zoo.
Notes:
After the mating season the male moults his striking blue feathers to eclipse into brown, and buff, then moults again to grow back into blue for breeding. This occurs from Spring to late Summer. The photograph was taken in late Summer so he would be shedding the last of his blue rather than growing it back.
