Field Notes

Description:

Red ladybug with black spots. The pronotum and head have large white spots.

Habitat:

Angel's Trumpet flower in the backyard. Due to the mild climate here, ladybugs are active all year long and are found on all plants although they prefer flowers.

Notes:

"...this insect has spread throughout the United States and Canada and has been a prominent factor in controlling aphid populations. H. axyridis hibernate in cooler months, though they will wake up and move around whenever the temperature reaches about 10 °C (50 °F). Because the beetles will use crevices and other cool, dry, confined spaces to hibernate, significant numbers may congregate inside walls if given a large enough opening." - Wikipedia
