Could also be a coachwhip. Do you have either a head or tail shot? (or both)
I think this is a Gray Rat Snake (a dark one) maybe like the last pic on here: http://www.tennsnakes.org/tn_ratsnake.htm My other two guesses would be a Black Kingsnake, or a Black Racer. http://www.state.tn.us/twra/pdfs/snakesposter.pdf
looks like this snake is 8 to 10 ft?
