Field Notes

Description:

There are questions about whether this sheep is really a Dall sheep or if it is a subspecies. I've treated it here as a subspecies. Stone sheep males can weigh between 73 to 113 kg (160 to 250 lbs.), while females weigh between 46 to 50 kg (100 - 110 lbs.). Body length also varies from 1.3 to 1.8 m (51 to 71 in) in males and 1.3 to 1.6 m (51 to 63 in) in females.

Habitat:

These sheep are generally found in meadows with steep, rugged country nearby to which the sheep can retreat when threatened by predators.

Notes:

This photograph was scanned from a 35mm slide. I really need to go back to Stone Mountain Provincial Park to do some more photography...grin.
