Field Notes
Description:
Also referred to as Pseudanthias huchtii, and also known as Hutchii Anthias, Pacific Anthias, Pacific Basslet, Pacific Fairy Basslet, Red-cheeked Fairy Basslet, Red-cheeked Anthias and Green Anthias.
They feed on zooplankton, and grow to about 9cm in length. Anthias are often found in large schools -- in the hundreds or thousands -- feeding on zooplankton high above the reef.
They start their life off as females and when there is an opening for a male, one will change to head up his harem of females. Males are much more colourful and often have filamentous streamers which they use for their mating dance and to deter other males.
Habitat:
Found in small schools on reef crests and dropoffs of mixed stony and soft corals, with the females outnumbering the males. Found at depths of 3 to 20m. Widespread in the western Asia-Pacific region.
Notes:
Spotted this beautiful fish (a male of the species) at a depth of about 50 feet. It was behaving like it was protecting its territory, and it was together with other similar-looking fish, although this one looked like their leader.
