Field Notes

Description:

A large monitor lizard on a river redgum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis).
Do not be standing between the goanna and its tree.
The tail is longer than the rest of the lizard.

Habitat:

These are common on the flood plain of the Murray river and ready to climb a tree for safety.

Notes:

Goanna, referring to Australias largest lizards is a mistranslation of the word 'iguana', another big lizard.
