Field Notes

Description:

A small gray, black, and white bird of open areas, the Loggerhead Shrike hardly appears to be a predator. But it uses its hooked beak to kill insects, lizards, mice, and birds, and then impales them on thorns (or barbed wire) to hold them while it rips them apart. Cornell Lab

Habitat:

Agricultural pasture

Notes:

This bird had just impaled the Mole Cricket...it was still kicking. I watched him eat a different one then started looking down the fence line & discovered his other stash.

Thanks Nopayahnah. I found out that the first insect is a Mole Cricket.
great series and very interesting information!
Thanks all...does anyone know what first insect is?
Wonderful series Claire. I know they do that, but had never seen impaled insects before.
Great photo. Yesterday I ran all over a nature preserve in Central Ohio trying to spot a Northern Shrike (a rare bird for the area). I took 4 hours, but I prevailed.
Amazing series - a well named bird by the looks of it!
