Field Notes
Description:
The double-barred finch (Taeniopygia bichenovii) is an estrildid finch found in dry savannah, tropical (lowland) dry grassland and shrubland habitats in northern and eastern Australia. They are sometimes referred to as Bicheno's finch; and also as owl finch, owing to the dark ring of feathers around their faces.
The Double-barred Finch is one of the long-tailed grass-finches and is notable for its 'owl-faced' features, having a white face bordered black.
This little finch was seen hopping around on the ground looking for insects
Habitat:
Seen along a path running beside a river in an area with a mix of mangroves, rainforest & open grassland.
