Field Notes

Description:

The squacco heron is a migrant, wintering in Africa. It is rare north of its breeding range. This is a stocky species with a short neck, short thick bill and buff-brown back. In summer, adults have long neck feathers.

Habitat:

Seen from a canoe while out looking for the Shoebill in the Mabamba Swamp area in Lake Victoria.
Last picture shows the habitat.

Notes:

Sorry, my camera was on the wrong setting and the photos came out too blue.

thanks for the confirmation kibuyu.
You're right. They are amazingly cryptic little herons, except when they fly and reveal completely white wings.
