Field Notes

Description:

Herb about 1/2 meter tall with long, stinging hairs all over plant, flowers and fruit. Leaves are palmate and are green to purple in color. Inflorescence bears small pink to purple flowers that have yellow in center. This plant bears hairy legumes (last image).

Habitat:

Full sun in grassy area along trail at Daley Ranch. "It is native to the coastal mountains of Baja California and Southern California as far north as the San Francisco Bay Area. It grows on dry mountain slopes, including areas that have recently burned, and chaparral and woodlands habitats."
