Field Notes

Description:

Male bird with a dark head, tail and upper body. The sides are rufous and eyes are red. There are white spots on the wings and a white belly and heart under its tail. This bird was quite elusive!

Habitat:

In chaparral area of Daley Ranch under bushes.

Notes:

"Their breeding habitat is chaparral, thickets or shrubby areas across western North America. This bird interbreeds with the Collared Towhee where their ranges overlap in southwestern Mexico." - Wikipedia

I get out a lot more in the cooler months. I don't care for hot weather. I know, why do I live here? :) I've been walking/hiking a few times each week and sometimes bring the dog. This is the first time I've seen this bird. I wish I was able to get better photo's. Maybe next time!
