Description:
It is a large tree, reaching 25–40 m tall. The bark is gray-brown to red-brown. Unlike closely related trees, it is deciduous, losing the leaves in the winter months, hence the name 'bald'. The main trunks are surrounded by cypress knees which are woody projections sent above the normal water level, roughly horizontally from the roots.
Habitat:
Swampy or riparian lowlands, either below water level or on areas prone to flooding.
Notes:
This spotting was from one of the northernmost extents of the range of Taxodium distichum.
