Field Notes

Description:

These large rodents are usually dark brown or black in color, with lighter colored quill tips. They have a chunky body, a small face, short legs and a short thick tail.

Habitat:

Thickets and woodlands, sometimes shrub and scrub areas. Small populations exist in desert and tundra habitats on the edges of their range.

This one was climbing to get away from the noisy photographers! We were making our way through an old path and I didn't see him until he was 10m up the trunk. I didn't know they were such good climbers either!
