Cindy, Squirrels keep the rattle snakes away!
I suppose we do as well although I have yet to see them. Great, I probably just jinxed myself and we'll now have them in our yard :)
@CindyBinghamKeiser: we have ground squirrels here too.
@Emma: I updated it to Western Gray Squirrel, Sciurus griseus.
Also depends on the types of predators around.
Perhaps. I suppose there are furry pests of one sort or another in neighborhoods :)
Cindy ,maybe it is either, or.

My Dentist is in Sacramento on Balmoral Drive, I photographed one there. The squirrel was unusually friendly and adorable!!
The squirrels down here are ground squirrels mostly. Our rats prefer the trees and eat our citrus.
If you spotted this in Sacremento,I would say Gray!!!
i know...I wavered between the two...should I update to Fox X Gray?
Misako, this looks so much like a Fox X Gray!
Wow Cindy--I thought there were squirrels in all US neighborhoods. I have taken them for granted. Rats in trees--yikes!
Nice spotting. Surprisingly, we don't have squirrels on our property. We do have rats that live in the trees though!
