Field Notes

Description:

The goosander (Common merganser in North America) is a large duck found in rivers and lakes of forested areas of Europe, northern and central Asia, and North America. The female has a reddish-brown head, white chin, and white secondary feathers on the wing.

Habitat:

Rivers, lakes. Spotted here on Lake Geneva near the shore.

Notes:

The goosander is a resident breeder on Lake Geneva, but more arrive from further north in the winter as this bird is a partial migrant. Does it look cold? Temp. -14 degrees Celsius… I would think of going further south!
