Field Notes

Notes:

Being so similar to the downy woodpecker, this girl was a sight for sore eyes. I had be looking for a hairy so long that after seeing her I must have fired off about a dozen photos before she flew away in search of more food. This was the best of the bunch.

Species ID Suggestions

Comments (2)

One of the best diagnostics for this bird is the bill. On the downy the bill is much smaller. : )
I was mis-IDing these as Downy Woodpeckers. Apparently Hairy Woodpeckers are 9" tall and Downy Woodpeckers are the identical look, but only 6" tall. So far, all my "Hairy Woodpeckers" are actually "Downy Woodpeckers." The males have a small rectangle of red on the top back of their heads, while the females have no red.
