Field Notes

Description:

Almost crow-sized, this is the largest woodpecker in America. They are mainly black with a red crest. They show white on the wings in flight. Adult males have a red line from the bill to the throat, in adult females these are black.

Habitat:

Saw this woodpecker while driving around on some of the back
"country roads" near Shepherdstown, WV.
