Field Notes

Description:

Flowers with silky white hairs, forming cottony tufts atop triangular stems; leaves grasslike, sparsely scattered along stem. Like the snowfall out of season, compact stands of cottongrass clothe northern bogs and meadows with a soft blanket of white in summer and fall.

Habitat:

Bogs, moist prairies meadows, tundra.
