Formosa Coral
Acropora formosa
6.99428, 125.72
Field Notes
Description:
This staghorn-looking coral has branches that form thickets, covering loose and sandy substrate across 10m or so. They grow to a height of about 1.5m. The surfaces of branches are even and fairly regular. The branches are longer if the coral colony is in deeper waters. Colors vary, but the tips of branches are usually of a lighter color.
Habitat:
Shallow lagoons and sheltered reefs. Occurs in tropical waters worldwide.
Notes:
This coral is easily damaged by storms or by boat anchors. I photographed this colony at a depth of less than 20 feet, at a dive site called San Juan Reef, off the western coast of Samal Island, Philippines.
