Rice Bug
Leptocorisa acuta
15.4562, 119.922
Field Notes
Description:
The Rice Bug is a resilient species. As their name implies, their preferred habitat is a rice field. However, in this part of the Philippines, the rice growing season ended a couple of months ago and the Rice Bugs turned to wild grasses. Now, as the dry season causes many of the wild grasses to wither and die, these bugs find sustenance wherever they can. I cannot be sure whether this one was eating or not, but I see Rice Bugs on Coconut leaves from time to time, in the dry season.
Habitat:
This rice bug was spotted on the leaflets of a Coconut Palm (Cocos nucifera). Coconuts, as one would expect, have many names in the numerous dialects of the Philippines. In the dialect of our area, they are known as "Ongot".
