Field Notes

Description:

Very tiny frog (toad?) Colors blend in with sand extremely well. There were several of these under an oak tree, and I almost didn't see them.
I only picked one up to show just how tiny they were. I carefully put this tiny little guy back under the oak with his buddies :)

Ohhh, a toad!!! When I watch the photo I think in a toad that I see in spain, the Bufo calamita, but as this is in USA is impossible. jejeje, I think that is a Fowler's toadlet (Bufo americanus)
Thanks All Thomas - I do live in North Florida and these were located in Tallahassee very close to a holding pond. Most of Northern Florida is considered the Panhandle to most :) so it could be a Fowlers. Going to check out the links everyone provided to see if I can get a match. Hard to get good photos of this tiny guy as he blended in with the background. Going to see if I can crop the one in my hand for a closer look. Thanks again everyone for all your wonderful suggestions.
It's definitely a toad & not a Grey Tree Frog. Grey's legs are much more muscular. I have them in my back yard & have occasionally kept them as pets over the years. Here's a link to a young one from my back yard: http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b155/LS6Tommy/IMG_7274.jpg It sure looks like a Fowler's toadlet, but I've read conflicting distibution info. Some articles say they're only in northern Florida, others say only in the Panhandle...
This is definitely a toad. I've got it narrowed down to 2 species: Fowler's toad or southern toad. I can't take the ID any further based on the images, so hopefully someone who knows more than I do will come by and see this one. http://www.wec.ufl.edu/extension/wildlife_info/frogstoads/index.php
grey tree frog perhaps? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gray_tree_frog
