Field Notes

Description:

Smaller woodpecker with shorter bill than the Hairy Woodpecker. White breasted with black wing feather that has white barring. The male has red on the back of his head, which has a pattern from the crown down of black, white, black, white...black.

Notes:

I have seen a male and female darting around my neighborhood, and for the past couple winters I would have a regular visits about 30 minutes after dawn and 30 before dusk from downies. This year, very few visits until today. They take the black oiled sunflower seeds and fly to the crab apple tree and put the seed in a hole to peck open the seeds.
