Field Notes

Description:

The Eurasian teal is among the smallest of the dabbling ducks that occur in Europe. It is easy to identify - a chestnut head and greenish blue band over the eye outlined with a cream-coloured boarder, the narrow white stripe coming from the shoulder and a yellow underside to the tail. They are seen most often during the winter here in the UK.

Habitat:

In the winter, they are found most often on wetland areas, freshwater lakes and estuaries.

Notes:

I had seen this duck for weeks but couldn't tell what it was because I always saw it from a distance. To give you an idea of the size, it almost looked like an adolescent mallard duckling (that of course made no sense, given the time of year and the fact it could fly!). Then we had brilliant sunshine yesterday and the colours of the head reflected in the light, and I was able to ID it! There were 2 males.
