Field Notes

Description:

Adult birds are about 23 cm in length. Males are primarily a rosy-red and females are colored as in the above photograph. The bill is heavy and designed to crack seeds.

Habitat:

Coniferous forests.

Notes:

A pair of these beautiful birds flew in and landed near me. I got this photo of the female, but the male turned and his photo didn't turn out.
