Description:
Our mission was to go back into the woods where we found fungi and try to find lichen growing on trees. Most of the lichen we found were in big patches on trees. The classification scheme for Flavopunctelia is:

Habitat:
We went outside on January 18 into a deciduous forest. It was cold enough outside that you would have to wear a jacket to keep warm so it was most likely in the 40’s. The sky was cloudy so you couldn’t see the sun much.
Notes:
The main body of the lichen is called the thallus. Lichen are part of the fungi kingdom. A perfect growing environment for lichen is a place that has a clean surface, clean air and can’t be crushed. The two living components that make up the lichen is algae and fungus. Lichens can be used to make dyes. Hyphae is the body part of lichen that allows it to cling to a grave stone. Tough environments for lichen to live in are the arctic and desert biomes.
