Field Notes

Description:

Larva of a psychid moth builds a house of sticks. This species typically uses two longer ones. It sews a silk thread to a branch before it sleeps for the day.

Notes:

The larvae will pupate inside their home but only males have a free flying stage.

I wondered that too. Does it help the moth to emerge, does it keep a clearance from lower branches. I don't have a theory yet. As they grow they make a slit from inside and grab another new twig through that gap. Cool.

It intrigues me how they often make one or two sticks much longer than the other. Must be some reason for it.!?
