Field Notes

Description:

The Norway Spruce is a large European coniferous tree. These trees can reach a height of 35-55 m (115–180 ft). Shown here in all their winter magnificence.

Habitat:

These trees were found in a subalpine zone at the altitude of 1300m. Much of the original forest was cleared to make space for cow pastures. The intact original forest can be seen not far in the background. The empty patch on the left on the first shot is the result of the Lothar storm which swept across Central Europe on December 26, 1999.

Notes:

The third shot shows cones hanging down the spruce’s branches. In alpine zones the Norway Spruce often forms mixed populations with silver fir, beech and larch.

Thank you Berndt and Karen! The strangest thing is that I could have taken the same shots today, and we're still 7 weeks away from winter! Central Europe lost about 20 degrees Celsius over the last few days and received heavy snowfalls.

Somehow i learned to like Spruces even in summer - i love their aroma...pure refreshment. And I like to walk on the ground where Spruces grow..always soft and without much noise...

Thank you Stian! A tree named after your country... This is just about 25 min behind my place. The picture was taken last week when it was -20 C. I was there again today and it was a warm -10C!
