Field Notes

Description:

A very large colony of weaver ants. Good description of colonies and nest building in the references.

Habitat:

This colony on Heliconia sp. in a large semi-urban yard and garden adjacent to a disturbed patch of remnant forest.

Notes:

These ants are ubiquitous here. This is the largest nest (last photo) I've ever seen (although they probably get larger). These ants are very defensive/aggressive and they deliver a painful but non-venomous bite, and they have a distinct and unpleasant odor.
