Field Notes

Description:

A Eurasian Coot's partial webbing (swimming assist) on its long strong toes, looking very prehistorical.
The pictures are taken from a natural corpse - a specimen that hadn't the luck to survive the extreme cold of the recent days (up to -25° C and pack ice).

Thanks, Stian. @Apple: Yes, #3 shows the webbings' function best - i found the #1 photographically best...couldn't actually decide which one to put in front...had low setting sun and I didn't want to turn the corpse around to catch better light for showing the function in a more beautiful way...I left the corpse like i found it, btw.
Wow, I can see the series in an art gallery, beautiful and creepy. My favorite shot is #3. Nature is very cold sometimes but no matter what it is always beautiful.
It's very sad that the coot didn't survive the cold, but that some amazing details on the feet
Yes, it's sad but in this case the natural way of selection. And indeed, I never would have had a chance to come that close to the webbings of the toes.
Sad that the coot did not survive the freeze but a great opportunity for us to be able to see the detail of the feet.
Very nice :) Sad that it couldn't survive, but that's life :( Yes they look prehistorical :)
