Description:
Immature, pear-shaped fruiting bodies with white glebae (spore-bearing interiors) and white rhizomorphs. Rhizomorphs are cord-like strands of mycelia.
Lycoperdon pyriforme is a saprobe that commonly fruits in autumn. It is also considered a choice edible when fresh.
Habitat:
Growing on a highly rotted piece of wood in a damp, shaded, partially wooded area in a back yard.
