Field Notes

Description:

The Northern River Otter is in the Weasel Family (L: 3'7" & T: 16"). Very playful animals. Fur dense, dark brown, often silvery on shin and chest. Ears and eyes small. Legs short; feet webbed. Tail long, thick-based, tapering to a point. Swims rapidly, stops with head raised out of water. Eats fish, frogs, turtles, muskrats. Runs well on land and loves to play and exercise, wanders widely. Loves to slide on ice and snow.

Habitat:

Clean rivers, wood-edged ponds, lakes.
