Field Notes

Description:

Perennial herb that was around 3 feet tall. Beautiful white flowers with a large hairy staminode (a sterile stamen) in the center.

Habitat:

I found a large cluster of this growing next to the road. They were growing on a south aspect slope among annual and perennial grasses and herbs.

Notes:

Another common name for penstemon is beardtongue due to the hairy staminode coming out of the flower.
