Field Notes

Description:

A large beautiful moth with a 4 to 6 inch wingspan and triangular or oval areas on both the fore wings and the hind wings. Also called a Window Winged Saturnian or Rothschild Atlas Moth.

Habitat:

Tropical rainforests in Central and South America.

Notes:

This photo was taken at the Ceiba Tops boat launch on the Amazon River just south of Iquitos.

Usually one should not ID a Saturniidae by picture. In this case, however, I am confident that it is Erycina. You should verify it anyway. And I definitely know they place you found it ;-)...
