Field Notes

Description:

These two brightly coloured lorikeets spend several minutes every day preening each other - allopreening, as it is called. Gives one the opportunity to see the beautiful colours on the underside of wing and tail feathers.

Habitat:

This pair has been visiting our back yard regularly feeding on berries and flower buds. They are seen frequently in this area nesting in tree hollows.

Notes:

These birds do not have easily discernible dimorphic traits but on close observation the two sexes can be differentiated by their behaviour, size and colouring.
