Field Notes

Description:

This bright yellows sea weed was highly branched, translucent and a bright yellow. It looked like stiff jelly but had a crunch to it. Two small clusters seen.

Habitat:

Spotted in a rock pool - Westernport Bay, Victoria, Australia

Notes:

An edible seaweed- used to make jellies. Also eaten as a vegetable. Ref link has interesting information. <br>
My thanks to Jae for identifying the genus. This could be G.salicornia.

No problem, Leuba. My family in Maluku once served me an agar agar dish and it was quite tasteful. Though the agar agar in the dish was green instead of the bright yellow colour your spotting has. In my link's description it says that agar agar turns yellow when dry. Thanks for sharing and I hope you'll find an ID for your beautiful spotting.

Thanks so much Jae. I know very little about these but I find them fascinating. Will check up on your lead - looks like Gracilaria alright. I will investigate the species seen in Bass Strait. thanks again.

Slight resemblance to Pepper Dulse (Laurencia pinnatifida). Do we get anything similar in the Southern Oceans ?
