Field Notes

Description:

Mating pair.
Male: White and black body; all black head. Top of head has a thicker crest. Deep orange eyes. At the meeting of the head and beak there is a white stripe. Most of the beak is black but a strip toward the end near where it curves down.
Female: All brown. Side and underside is lighter brown with darker brown in it. Black eyes. Beak is black all but a strip toward the end near where it curves down.

Habitat:

Flooded canal that connects to a lake.

Notes:

There had been a few females in the canal for a few weeks before they started showing up with a male each.
