Description:
This vulture patiently posed (or it kept on eye on me, showing no aggression or fear.) The black vulture is a large bird of prey with black feathers. The head is bare; the skin a dark gray. While generally regarded as a scavenger, black vultures can kill young or injured mammals. This vulture hunts by sight rather than smell. It also follows vultures that hunt by smell to carrion.
Habitat:
Spotted pond-side, near a bayou. The black vulture prefers open habitats of various types.
Notes:
The black vulture is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in the USA.
