Field Notes

Description:

Fruitbodies up to about 18cm across and upto 10cm thick, growing on the edge of coniferous plantation. Spongy texture and the pores on the underside discoloured easily, bruising brown. The 4th photo is a cross-section of the second fruitbody showing concentric colour zones (growth rings?). Dyer's Mazegill can be used to dye material with different parts making different colours from a murky green to golden yellow and brown. Here's a link to an interesting blog about dying with mushrooms and Dyer's Mazegill: http://shroomworks.wordpress.com/category/mushroom-dyeing/phaeolus-schw… Inonotus cuticularis looks similar to me but is described as growing on deciduous trees particularly oak and beech. Inonotus radiatus grows on alder

I was surprised! They must have a very gentle mode of growth not to push the needles away
