New Guinea Singing Dog

Canis lupus dingo

Hi KatCuff! This dig is actually a New Guinea Singing dog. They are related to basenjis, but their closest relative is the dingo. Like both animals, their morphology reflects the "wild-type". Bu unlike either dog their voice box is different, enabling them to howl longer than a normal dog or wolf. They are believed to be extinct in the wild; the last singing dog in New Guinea was seen in the 1980's, and only 100 are in captivity.
Nice portrait! Amazing how much that looks like a basenji which comes from Africa! Do you have more info on this dog? I know basenjis are the barkless dog; they howl and yodel to communicate. They have to be close relatives! Since this is in a zoo, I'm assuming that they are wild in Guatemala. Check out my basenji shots and see how the faces are very similar. Thanks for introducing me to a breed that's new to me. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/...
