Field Notes

Description:

The Goosander or Common merganser is a large duck found on rivers and lakes. Males have a whitish body, the head black with an iridescent green gloss, the rump and tail grey, and the wings largely white on the inner half, black on the outer half. Standing out with its long hooked red bill.

Habitat:

Rivers and lakes of forested areas of Europe, northern and central Asia, and North America. Spotted here on Lake Geneva.

Notes:

This duck has a crest of longer head feathers which usually lie smoothly rounded behind the head. The goosander is a resident breeder on Lake Geneva, but more arrive from further north in the winter as this bird is a partial migrant. The female can be seen at http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/8841289

I would love to join Marta! But the mission radius just doesn't quite make it to this spotting :-( You could maybe move the center slightly, or ask Peter whether he can increase the radius for this one?
I would like to invite you to add your duckies, swans and geese to this new mission: http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/10051878 Many thanks!
Thanks Malcolm! They don't go as far south as you are... although it's so cold here now you do wonder! We have significantly more of them in winter.
Beautiful bird and impressive photos
