Description:
The Goosander or Common merganser is a large duck found on rivers and lakes. Males have a whitish body, the head black with an iridescent green gloss, the rump and tail grey, and the wings largely white on the inner half, black on the outer half. Standing out with its long hooked red bill.
Habitat:
Rivers and lakes of forested areas of Europe, northern and central Asia, and North America. Spotted here on Lake Geneva.
Notes:
This duck has a crest of longer head feathers which usually lie smoothly rounded behind the head. The goosander is a resident breeder on Lake Geneva, but more arrive from further north in the winter as this bird is a partial migrant.
