Pansy or Viola
Viola tricolor hortensis
42.9615, -85.6557
Field Notes
Description:
Pansies and violas come in many different colors and sizes but all can be identified by their beautiful flowers that look like faces. They are very hardy. In my Michigan garden they should be annuals but every year I have a few that come back in the Spring. They actually tolerate cold very well and are one of the first things I plant in the Spring.
Habitat:
Domestic gardens. They like sun. They will tolerate some shade. In fact in hot weather it's actually the other way around..they tolerate some sun and prefer shade in the heat of summer.
Notes:
Slugs and snails will feed on them.
One of my favorite plants.
They work great in hanging baskets since you can move them into the shade earlier later in the season when it is hot to preserve their beauty more.
