Description:

The common warthog is a distinctive species of wild pig. Unlike other pigs it is predominantly a grazer. This individual was part of a bachelor group of young males which regularly visited the back garden of the farmhouse on the UmPhafa nature reserve. When older these bachelor groups dispand and the mature males will become solitary. Females however stay in social groups of up to 16 individuals throughout life and care for their collective offspring together.

Thanks all. C.Sydes - Yes I think they will probably take a look at other food opportunities. I've also been suspicous of them at least sampling a bit of meat. I put some bait out for carnivores and set a camera trap recently, I did get a jackal or two but most of the footage was warthogs and they seemed pretty interested in the chicken guts. :-)

Great photos. Their diet probably is predominantly vegetarian but I think they are also opportunists; I observed a family enthusiastically tucking into a carcass. I was too far away across a river to be sure but it looked like the remains of an Impala.

Thank you, I know they're not everyone's idea of beauty but I think they're lovely.
