Description:

Appears to be part of the Montastraea family. Hard to tell whether it's an annularis since this typically occurs in various morphs.

Habitat:

Coral reef in the Caribbean sea.

Notes:

Spotted this Montastraea coral while snorkelling in the Archipiélago de los Canarreos.

Wow thanks Sarah! Yep, we were snorkelling around 10 km's off shore in a reef. I browsed through this site on Caribbean coral and narrowed it down to Montastraea. I also thought the polyps made it appear to be a variation of annularis. But there's so many morphs that it's hard to tell. Yep retract that id agree with your annularis, the polyps look about right from comparison with the soft corals and gorgonians surrounding and the encrusting nature, id say it was a good guess, were you snorkelling?
