Field Notes

Description:

Ariadne merione, also known as the Common Castor, is an orange butterfly with brown lines whose larvae feed almost exclusively on Castor Ricinus communis. It is similar in appearance to Ariadne ariadne, the Angled Castor.

This species is found in south-eastern Asia. Their wingspan ranges between 30–35mm. Like others in the Nymphalidae family, their front two legs are small and unused, effectively making them four-legged. These smaller appendages are covered with long hairs, giving them the characteristic brush look.

thanks Daniele... yes it may be so. The shape looks right and the heart like designs along the boarder don't look so pronounced as in the photo of the Intricate species. But I have a really hard time distinguishing from photos. I thought the one I posted before - the Angled Castor - was the same. Guess I have to learn to look more closely!
You're welcome pamsai! Have a look at this page: you may have the Dakhan sub-species: http://www.ifoundbutterflies.com/8-nymphalidae/ariadne-merione What a wonderful garden you have!
Thanks Daniele for your ID.
