Field Notes

Description:

I found this beautiful flower on the ʻōhiʻa lehua tree. It is endemic to Hawai'i and is also the most common native tree of the Islands. The specific tree I saw was around 15 feet tall but they can get up to 80 if conditions are favorable.

Habitat:

I found this growing just outside the the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. The observatory was surrounded by volcanic basalt and not too much else. Must be a hardy plant!

Notes:

Thanks for the suggestion mauna kunzah!
