Wasp Moth
Amata sp.
15.4562, 119.92
Field Notes
Habitat:
This Wasp Moth was spotted, in the rice mill backyard, on Tropical Whiteweed (Ageratum conyzoides Linn.), known as Bulak-manok, in the Philippines.
Notes:
Erebidae; Arctiinae; Syntomini; Amata sp. Moths of the tribe Syntomini are wasp mimics. One look at the photo makes it clear why they are called Wasp Moths. However, it seems that these moths may have been rather neglected because there is very little information available, resulting in difficulty, when it comes to identification. Philippine Lepidoptera have a pretty good collection of Wasp Moth pictures, but only two or three are identified to species level. The vast majority are identified to the level of the tribe Syntomini (to which all Wasp Moths belong) and the remaining few are named to genus level.
