Stag Beetle
Lucanus (genus)
-24.3933, 31.7772
Field Notes
Description:
The English name is derived from the large and distinctive mandibles found on the males of most species, which resemble the antlers of stags.
Male stag beetles use their jaws to wrestle each other for favoured mating sites in a manner that parallels the way stags fight over females.
Notes:
From the size of those mandibles, I'm guessing this is a male!
I am still unsure as to the exact species this one is.
