Field Notes

Description:

Pseudoxya diminuta Walker, 1871. These are nymphs of Pseudoxya diminuta. According to Wikipedia, Pseudoxya is a monotypic genus which means that it is a genus with only one species - P. diminuta. I have seen groups of these nymphs several times over the years, but this is a really big congregation. I tried doing just an approximate count, but it was useless. It is difficult to count little creatures that keep moving around and even when I reached an approximate tally, I would notice another one or two groups. So, I soon gave up on the counting and jotted down in my notebook - A lot !

Habitat:

I spotted this congregation of Pseudoxya diminuta nymphs in our backyard vegetable plot, this afternoon. They were pretty much everywhere, but most of them were on the string beans.

Hi Tom, I like your curious kids idea. In addition to curiosity, they have a pretty good appetite. They are just munching their way through those leaves at a tremendous rate. Regards, John B.
